Sustainability Initiatives

Your Sodexo Campus Dining Team is dedicated to sustainability.  We know we can all work together to make a positive impact right here at University of South Carolina Upstate. In addition to the many initiatives we take on as a company, we have implemented the following programs specific to University of South Carolina Upstate.

Cage Free

100% of the cracked egges on campus come from cage free sources.

Seafood Sourcing 

We purchase only NSC (Marine Stewardship Council) sourced seafood.

Local Dairy 

Our dairy products come fresh, from local farms and is rBGH/artificial hormone free. 

Fair Trade
Dining services now serves only fair trade coffee in its Resident Dining cafe. Fair trade helps assure that the farmers who grow the products get a fair price in exchange for great international coffee. Resident Dining facilities offers Aspretto 100% Fair Trade Arabica Beans and 100% Organic Teas.

Biofuels
Dining services now recycles its waste oil for recycling into biofuels used in biodiesel vehicles. Hundreds of gallons of waste oil are now diverted from landfills to clean, closed loop fuels.

Trayless Dining

We are a trayless campus. Customers without trays typically waste less food and beverages. It is also a healthier approach to eating, as we all know that at times our eyes are bigger than our stomach. Trayless dining also reduces the amount of water and detergents needed to wash trays - and saves energy too!

Vegetarianism
Resident dining offers many vegetarian options in addition to our vegan/vegetarian daily specials.   

Did you know that the consumption of meat at Union is responsible for the emission of more than 1,400 metric tons of carbon per year? That accounts for more than 5 percent of Union’s total carbon footprint! By reducing your intake of meat (even by just half), you are helping to reduce your carbon and ecological footprint, as well as that of the college. Check out more info here.

    Did you know?

·         You would save more water by not eating a single pound of California beef than you would by not showering for an entire year.
·         Producing a single hamburger patty uses enough fuel to drive 20 miles.
·         An eight-ounce steak requires requires enough grains to raise the cow to fill 45 people's bowls.

Whole Foods

Whole foods are those that do not contain added sugar, salt, fat or chemicals; they are also foods that are unprocessed and unrefined before being consumed. Some examples include raw fruits and vegetables, unpolished grains, nuts, seeds and sprouts, as well as unprocessed meat.

By increasing your consumption of whole foods you will be healthier by avoiding mal-nutritious additives and you will reduce your footprint by decreasing the packaging and reprocessing of middlemen. Do your part by checking labels and reducing your consumption of repackaged and reprocessed foods!

Xprss Nap Dispensers

Xprss Nap Dispensers save energy and waste.  The napkins are made of 100% recycled paper and the dispenser will encourage customers to take (and waste) fewer napkins. Energy is saved because less power is used to recycle paper products than to create them from virgin material.  

APEX Dishwashing System

APEX combines technology and products designed to save water and energy, minimize the impact of products on the environment, and has a built-in method of measuring results. The APEX management approach uses a tablet PC and wireless technology to communicate with the system’s controller to download, process and analyze data to establish each foodservice operation’s “rack-to-guest ratio.” By monitoring and improving this ratio, the system helps reduce the amount of water and energy used at each facility, and improve total operational efficiency.
